The Claremore Area

The city of Claremore, Oklahoma is an extension of the Tulsa metro area.  It is admired for its quiet neighborhoods and active business districts.  It is the home town of legendary entertainer, Will Rogers, who’s family Rogers county is named after due to the fact that they were among the first settlers.

Settled by Osage Indians in 1802, the land presently known as Claremore was originally named after a chief named “Gra-moi”, which lead to a more familiar derivative of Claremore by French traders who prounounced the name “Clairmont”  Ruined by the Battle of Osage Mound, the Osage Indian village was obliterated in 1817.  The American Civil War brought yet more injury to the area but a quick recovery was had after the war.  By means of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, Claremore was set aside as a relocation site for Native Americans and the Cherokee Nation – a tribal jurisdiction spanning throughout Northeast Oklahoma.

The latter 1800’s was a period of development with the city’s first post office.  A growth period emerged with the coming of railways to Indian Territory where two transport lines met in the center of town.  It was during this time frame that the French given name of Clermont was changed to its present day name of Claremore after a misspelling by a clerk became official.  Growth was further fueled in Claremont after an oil driller discovered an underground water supply that was promoted as healing water.  Bath houses began popping up in the area contributing to the population growth.

Claremore has been portrayed in several entertainment productions including the musical “Oklahoma!”, a Quantum Leap episode, and the movie “Where the Heart Is.
